Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue: And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the Commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring: That ye may remember, and do all My Commandments, and be holy unto your God. I AM the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I AM the LORD your God. (Num. 15:38-41)
God directed the Israelites to add fringes on the borders, not as a decorative ornament, but as a simple reminder of the Commandments of the LORD and His Holiness. The LORD, He is God, and He commanded His people to keep all His Precepts, Statutes, and Ordinances, and to do them. They were not to follow their own opinions or keep their own counsel or go their own way but wholly follow the LORD. Anything else was spiritual adultery and wickedness which God would punish and correct in His people whom He desired would be holy before Him. He alone is God and He had brought these people out of their bondage in Egypt and would continue to provide and redeem His people.
As they prepared to leave the place of judgment, having first refused to enter in to the promised land on the report of the ten spies, then trying to go in when God said they would not go in, the people of Israel were warned about sin and keeping the Commandments of God. They were to put these tassels of blue upon their garments, garments which would never wear out while they wandered, to remind them of the holiness of God and their obedience unto Him as the Law-giver and their Provider and Redeemer. He had brought them out of Egypt, and their future generations were to remember all that He had done for the people of Israel and because God is Holy they were to be obedient to the Law of God and all that He commanded.
For the person who does not know God or does not understand what God was saying because they do not hear the Spirit of God speaking, this passage seems silly or useless, but it is a reminder to us who know God that He is Holy, He still commands His people, and He still expects His people to keep and to do His Word. God’s people are commanded to teach all nations, reach the lost, and preach the Word of God. Doing so means keeping and doing the whole Word of God, rightly divided and properly studied, that we may become more like Him who died for us and has given us new life. Those who do not yet know Christ through repentance and faith in Him and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary are to be shown Christ and Him crucified that they may believe in Him for Salvation. Those who are followers of Christ are to be taught His Word and His ways until we all come into the image of that perfect man, Jesus Christ. Those who are mature in Christ and leaders in the body of Christ are to show Christ and live Christ in all that we do, for His honour and glory until He takes us Home.
Until that day, God has sent those of us that know Him out into this world to reach the lost that they might be saved from sin. He desires that His people strive to be holy and obedient unto Him that we might minister to those around us who are hurting and in need as He provides. We serve others, equipped with the Word of reconciliation and righteousness, rightly divided and fitly spoken, that they may see Christ in us, the hope of Glory. Our GOD has commanded us to love one another with an unfeigned love, even as He first loved us, and to disciple one another in the Word of GOD so that we may all grow in grace and in the Knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Our Lord has commissioned those who are His with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to go where He sends us in the power of the Holy Spirit. As we go, we are to proclaim the Good News of forgiveness through repentance and reconciliation with the Father through faith in His Son, that those who believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah of GOD might have life in His Name.
GOD is not willing that any should perish, but that all would come to repentance and the knowledge of the Truth. Jesus loves you and wants to establish a covenant relationship with you that is real and personal. Surrender to Him on His terms and He will give you a brand new life of discipleship and fellowship with Him that is abundant and everlasting. GOD calls you to faith in Christ and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary to pay your sIn debt. He has provided the only way of reconciliation with GOD, forgiveness from GOD, and Salvation through Jesus Christ, the Son of GOD who is GOD the Son, to give you a new life in Christ. Turn away from yourself and your sIn and turn to Him alone for eternal Life, now and always.
