How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife? Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you. And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do. So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes. And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him. Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God's: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it. (Deut. 1:12-17)
As with any nation, when the people are too great to oversee by one, help is needed to judge and lead the people in the ways of righteousness and according to the Law. God had Moses appoint leaders and captains from each tribe and over various groups to judge them according to His Law. Each judge and captain was to maintain his integrity as an impartial and righteous judge who judged between the people during disputes and oversaw different levels of authority within the tribes and nation of Israel. The people were too great for Moses to do it by himself, having grown into a great number of people, and a hierarchy of command allowed the people to function.
God knows that all large groups need structure and command and that is also true of His church. He has placed people at various levels not to rule arbitrarily or for unrighteous reasons but to feed the flock of God and manage His organization as we do the work of God. Over and over God has directed that His people should obey and judge with righteous judgment, not respect persons, nor be afraid of others. Those in leadership positions are to follow God, seek His will, and lead His people, not constraining them or ruling over them in unrighteousness. God’s people, especially those who lead His church, are to be like Him. Because of our repentance of our sins and our faith in Him and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary, we serve in leadership, not rule, just as He had Moses and these others do, and as He did both in obedience to His Father and as an example to His people.
While we are here God has sent those of us that know Him out into this world to reach the lost that they might be saved from sin. He desires that His people strive to be holy and obedient unto Him that we might minister to those around us who are hurting and in need as He provides. We serve others, equipped with the Word of reconciliation and righteousness, rightly divided and fitly spoken, that they may see Christ in us, the hope of Glory. Our God has commanded us to love one another with an unfeigned love, even as He first loved us, and to disciple one another in the Word of God so that we may all grow in grace and in the Knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Our Lord has commissioned those who are His with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to go where He sends us in the power of the Holy Spirit. As we go, we are to proclaim the Good News of forgiveness through repentance and reconciliation with the Father through faith in His Son, that those who believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah of God might have life in His Name.
God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance and the knowledge of the Truth. Jesus loves you and wants to establish a covenant relationship with you that is real and personal. Surrender to Him on His terms and He will give you a brand new life of discipleship and fellowship with Him that is abundant and everlasting. God calls you to faith in Christ and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary to pay your sIn debt. He has provided the only way of reconciliation with God, forgiveness from God, and Salvation through Jesus Christ, the Son of God who is God the Son, to give you a new life in Christ. Turn away from yourself and your sIn and turn to Him alone for eternal Life, now and always.
In Christ,
