So they came and called unto the porter of the city: and they told them, saying, We came to the camp of the Syrians, and, behold, there was no man there, neither voice of man, but horses tied, and asses tied, and the tents as they were. And he called the porters; and they told it to the king's house within. And the king arose in the night, and said unto his servants, I will now shew you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we be hungry; therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, When they come out of the city, we shall catch them alive, and get into the city. And one of his servants answered and said, Let some take, I pray thee, five of the horses that remain, which are left in the city, (behold, they are as all the multitude of Israel that are left in it: behold, I say, they are even as all the multitude of the Israelites that are consumed:) and let us send and see. They took therefore two chariot horses; and the king sent after the host of the Syrians, saying, Go and see. And they went after them unto Jordan: and, lo, all the way was full of garments and vessels, which the Syrians had cast away in their haste. And the messengers returned, and told the king. (2 Kings 7:10-15)
The Syrians laid siege of Samaria and drove the citizens near to starvation. What food and water they had was sold for great prices, yet Elisha told them that they would see a day that basics would sell for ridiculously low prices. One of the king’s men scoffed at the idea and was told that he would see it but not enjoy it. God later scared the Syrians away with the sounds of a great army and when it was discovered and told the king, all the city rushed out to see this marvel and miracle. The man who doubted was in charge of keeping order at the gate and was run over, so he saw what God had done, but did not enjoy it, just as Elisha had said.

Doubt caused this man to miss out on the blessing and deliverance of God. God delivered the city from the siege of the Syrians with a mighty miracle but the man did not believe when Elisha told him of what God would do and so he died before he could partake of what he saw God do. The lepers who discovered the Syrians were gone collected many spoils, the people of the city recovered much food and other stuff, but the man who doubted only saw the work of God but never received it. He tried to keep people in order but the masses were too desirous of the bread and food to do so orderly and he would not get out of the way and so he died without receiving God’s gift.

Many people miss the blessings God has for them because they do not believe. Whether it is denying miracles happen, or that they happen today, or just not believing that God could deliver them from their sin simply by faith in Jesus Christ and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary, their doubt leads to disbelief and they miss all that God has for them. Even Christians can miss out on God’s greater work and provision by doubting all that God can and will do for His people and the ministries, missions, and discipleship He has called us to do for Him. We fail to believe His Word and miss opportunities to reach the lost with the Gospel. We doubt His power today and are not teaching the nations all things whatsoever He has commanded. We determine for ourselves what preaching is and are not obedient to preach the whole Word to the whole World. God has commissioned, called, and commanded that all His people are to be about His Kingdom business and yet so many of us are on the bench or sidelines and not in the game. There is too much at stake for us to be run over at the gate of the kingdom trying to control hungry people from getting the bread of life according to our rules instead of obeying God and sharing His message of grace.

While we are here on this earth as His ambassadors and ministers, God has commanded those of us who are His saints and know Him to go out into this world to reach the lost that they might be saved from sin. He desires that His people strive to be holy and obedient unto Him that we might minister to those around us who are hurting and in need as He provides. We serve others, equipped with the Word of reconciliation and righteousness, rightly divided and fitly spoken, that they may see Christ in us, the hope of Glory. Our God has commanded us to love one another with an unfeigned love, even as He first loved us, and to disciple one another in the Word of God so that we may all grow in grace and in the Knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Our Lord has commissioned those who are His with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to go where He sends us in the power of the Holy Spirit. As we go, we are to proclaim the Good News of forgiveness through repentance and reconciliation with the Father through faith in His Son, that those who believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah of God might have life in His Name.

God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance and the knowledge of the Truth. Jesus loves you and wants to establish a covenant relationship with you that is real and personal. Surrender to Him on His terms and He will give you a brand new life of discipleship and fellowship with Him that is abundant and everlasting. God calls you to faith in Christ and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary to pay your sIn debt. He has provided the only way of reconciliation with God, forgiveness from God, and Salvation through Jesus Christ, the Son of God who is God the Son, to give you a new life in Christ. Turn away from yourself and your sIn and turn to Him alone for eternal Life, now and always.

Open mine eyes that I may see your Truth

Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel? And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber. And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan. Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about. And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. (2 Kings 6:11-17)
God revealed the secret plans of the king of Syria each time he made them. Learning of Elisha’s revealing his plans, he pursued him and attempted to surround him but was no match for the thousands sent by the LORD to protect His prophet. Their presence was revealed to the servant of Elisha even as the men of Syria were blinded and captured. Though the king of Israel wanted to kill the invading bands of Syria, Elisha instead returned them to their own country.

The plans and thoughts of men are known unto the LORD and the king of Syria could not do that which God did not allow. Each time he made an encampment it was revealed, and learning the human agent, he sought to stop the revelations. Yet, he could not stop the Word of the LORD from going forth nor could he outmatch God and His agents and forces. God continued to work mightily through His prophet on behalf of Israel despite their idolatry and despite their sin and He was merciful to those around Israel as well.

Those of us who have put our faith and trust in the LORD and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary for Salvation can also trust that He is greater than any of our enemies, our problems, or any crisis which may come our way. Not only is He God and ruler over all the earth, He has legions of angels who do His will and all His Church in which to accomplish His plans. Our God does not force anyone to believe but invites whosoever will come to receive His free gift through repentance and faith in Him, but He will prevail over the plans and purposes of this world and the victory which He has already won over sin and death will be ultimately consummated in His victory over all those who have rejected Him and all those who oppose our Creator, Redeemer, and King. He has called, commissioned, and commanded us to go out and reach the lost, teach the nations, and preach the Word and the missions, ministry, and discipleship of His Church are to be for that purpose until He is done with us and recalls His ambassadors Home to Himself.

Until that day, God has commanded those of us who are His saints and know Him to go out into this world to reach the lost that they might be saved from sin. Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed

And it was so, when Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel. So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha. And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean. But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the Name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper. Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage. And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean? Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. (2 Kings 5:8-14)
Namaan, the honorable captain of the host of Syria, despite his position and prestige was a leper. He sought deliverance and a servant from Israel informed him of the prophet in Israel who could deliver him from his leprosy. Namaan first went to the king who was terrified both of the appearance of Namaan to his palace with a letter from the king of Syria and Namaan’s efforts to seek healing in his land. Elisha sent word to have Namaan come to him and gave Namaan a simple command for healing. Though at first his faith was weak and his pride was strong, he repented and obeyed and was healed of the leprosy. He demonstrated his repentance and faith further by forsaking the idol worship of the Syrians.

Though the simple command seemed at first beneath Namaan, his faith won out and he dunked in the river Jordan at the word of the prophet and was healed. Namaan’s faith was confirmed by his healing and God demonstrated Himself strong on Namaan’s behalf, showing that God is God, not just in Israel but of all the earth. Elisha’s servant did not demonstrate the same faith but sought gain for the healing and ended up a leper instead. God did not heal Namaan to gain anything for Elisha or his servant but for His glory as Creator, Redeemer, and King, the Righteous God who heals and delivers those who come to Him in faith and obedience.

Sometimes what God asks of us is simple and small, yet important for He says that he who is faithful in a little will be faithful in much and he of whom much is given, much will be required. For the Christian who has put their faith in God and been born again through His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary, nothing that God asks of us should be seen as too little or too small for us to do. God has asked it of us for His purposes and His ways, which are not our ways, and we are to believe His Word and trust His plan in order to bring Him glory and testify of His mighty works before the children of men. We are His people, commissioned and commanded to reach the lost with the Gospel, teach all nations whatsoever He has commanded, and to preach the Word at all times and in all places. We are to continue to be found faithful in the ministries, missions, and discipleship which our Commander has called us to do until He returns for His own and consummates all things unto Himself.

Until that day, God has commanded those of us who are His saints and know Him to go out into this world to reach the lost that they might be saved from sin. Is it well with thee?

And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread. And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither. And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there. And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him. And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people. (2 Kings 4:8-13)
Elisha traveled through the land and stopped at the home of a woman of means and of good reputation in the land. She was hospitable and provided for his upkeep during his travels in the area, even converting part of her house to a guest chamber for him. Elisha sought to repay her kindness with whatever she might ask, but she was content and had no need of glory or a raise in her station in life. Elisha entreated the LORD who gave her a son whom Elisha will later raise from the dead in response to her faith in God.

This woman demonstrated great faith in God not only in serving the holy man of God but also in trusting in Him for all her needs. She was content with all God had given her and had no complaints to bring to the king nor did she have any need of glory or praise. Her people were enough for her and with God as her provider she had all she needed. God gave her a son and when she sought Elisha on behalf of that son, God gave the boy his life again in response to her faith in Him.

Those who have trusted God with the salvation He gives to whosoever will receive His free gift through faith in Him and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary are also to continue to trust Him for our needs as we walk by faith on our journey here in this broken world. God also calls His people to provide for those who are doing the work of God, as He leads us to give cheerfully and abundantly to His work. Because God gives unto us abundantly, we give both to the local congregation to accomplish the ministries, missions, and discipleship which God has called us to and to those individuals and ministries God leads us to support that together we can reach the lost with the Gospel, teach all nations all things whatsoever He hath commanded, and preach His Word at all times and in all places. God equips, encourages, and enables His people to do that which He calls them to do for His glory and we are to be content with that which He gives unto us. We should trust and believe that our Creator made us and knows our needs, our Redeemer has saved us and wants our best, and our King deserves our worship and our obedience unto Him. May we continue to be faithful unto Jesus who is our Lord and our God until He returns and we are ushered into His presence.

Until that day, God has commanded those of us who are His saints and know Him to go out into this world to reach the lost that they might be saved from sin. This is but a light thing in the sight of the LORD

So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days' journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them. And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab! But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may enquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah. And Jehoshaphat said, The Word of the LORD is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him. And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay: for the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab. And Elisha said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee. (2 Kings 3:9-14)
Moab revolted against Israel because of the tribute tax imposed upon them and Jehoram enlisted the aid of the king of Judah and the king of Edom to put down the rebellion. When they encountered trouble a week into their journey and run out of water, they enquired of the Lord through Elisha. Elisha only does it because of the king of Judah. Elisha gives them the Word of the LORD and of their impending victory over Moab. The princes of Moab came against Israel and the battle went against Moab causing the king of Moab to sacrifice his eldest, his heir to gain favor with his gods.

When the armies of Israel, Judah, and Edom were in need during this battle, they came to Elisha who brought the Word of the LORD because of Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah. God gave them water and then victory over the Moabites with a great slaughter, so much so that during a final push which was unsuccessful, the king of Moab sacrificed his own son and heir to their gods.

As Christians we will run into challenging times both as a result of living in this broken sinful world and because of that which the enemy brings against us from time to time. Natural events, our own choices, or the works of those who oppose our God will cause trouble, difficulty, calamity, and disaster. In all these we turn to our God who gives us strength and peace despite the storms of life which come upon us all. We do not need to turn to the ways of those who do not follow God to overcome for our God has already given us victory over sin and death, provision during times of need, and the calm assurance of His presence and power in all things. Our faithful response and trusting resilience during individual trials and tribulations and our rest and reliance on Him who sustains us not only reflects on our God but will draw many to want that peace and assurance. We can worship as Paul sang when in jail or pray as Jehoshaphat sought the LORD when in need and give thanks in all things. Our walk by faith will give us an opportunity to reach the lost, teach the nations, and preach the Word in ministry, missions, and discipleship until He is done with us.

Until that day, God has commanded those of us who are His saints and know Him to go out into this world to reach the lost that they might be saved from sin.
