But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water: yet they shall flee away. Stand, stand, shall they cry; but none shall look back.
She is empty, and void, and waste: and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together, and much pain is in all loins, and the faces of them all gather blackness.
Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard. (Nahum 2:8,10,13)
GOD is pronouncing the final judgment on the city of Nineveh. The Assyrians as a nation will soon be overcome by the Babylonians. The repentance when Jonah preached is over and now the sIn of the Assyrians is full and GOD's wrath is complete. He declares the end of their nation, and will soon accomplish all that He has said. Today all that is left of them are the Syrians, a mixture of leftovers from the Assyrians, the Babylonians, The Aramites and the Canaanites with a small mixture of Samaritan and Jewish descendants. And when they come against Israel in the final days, even that leftover will be vanquished and no more will remain.
The pronouncement against the enemies of Israel and GOD is the same over and over again, and the result is also the same. GOD says what He means and means what He says: About nations, people, and sIn. His judgment on sinners is equally sure: Those that do not repent of their sIn, and surrender to Him on His terms will be cast away from His presence. He cannot allow sIn to go unpunished, or unpaid for. All of us are guilty, and unless we receive the forgiveness He has already paid for on the Cross of Calvary, we would all likewise perish. And just as the judgment on Nineveh was carried out, so will the judgment for our sIn. Without Christ, we are men most miserable, and without Hope in this world.
But, GOD doesn't want us to perish, He wants us to find the knowledge of the Truth. The Truth that Jesus died for our sIns, and rose again that we might have eternal life. Not just in the 'by-and-by' but now, abundant and free. Place your trust in Him and be born again as He said you must.
And if you already living for Jesus, Cast you cares upon Him and tell others of the free gift they can have.
