He did that which was right in the sight of the LORD

In the second year of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel reigned Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah. He was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, yet not like David his father: he did according to all things as Joash his father did. Howbeit the high places were not taken away: as yet the people did sacrifice and burnt incense on the high places. And it came to pass, as soon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand, that he slew his servants which had slain the king his father. But the children of the murderers he slew not: according unto that which is written in the book of the Law of Moses, wherein the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall be put to death for his own sin. He slew of Edom in the valley of salt ten thousand, and took Selah by war, and called the name of it Joktheel unto this day. (2 Kings 14:1-7)
Though Amaziah did not return the people completely back to the ways of the LORD and walk as David had walked with God, he did restore much of the proper worship and integrity of the people of Judah. He cleaned house of those who had murdered his father, but not the following generations, as he followed the Law of Moses in exacting punishment under the Law. He also came against Edom, yet his campaign against Israel for her sins was not successful and much of the treasury was lost to Israel as a result.

God calls all leaders to not only serve those they lead but also lead them in His ways. The king of Judah sought to restore Judah to the ways of God but as the people resisted, he cleaned house and brought lawful justice but did not bring the people back to the worship God required. Amaziah led by example and with a servant’s heart, just as his ancestor David, but in worship only walked as his own father had walked. Leaving the high places for people to worship apart from the temple meant the people did not come together before the Lord as they were to do according the Law of Moses.

Godly leaders are humble servants, not looking for their own vainglory or self-aggrandizement but to glory in the Lord. God wants leaders who will walk in His ways and do His will and calls all who are His to follow the example of Christ in drawing all men unto Himself. Jesus always did the Father’s will and pointed those who would hear back to the Word of God. We are to be like Christ and have the Word of Christ in our hearts and demonstrated in our submitted sacrificial lives. With the mind of Christ, we are to reach the lost with the Gospel, teach the nations all He has commanded, and preach the whole Word to the whole world, until all have heard or He is done with us.

Until that day when God calls us Home or until He comes back to get us, God has commanded those of us who are His saints and know Him to go out into this world to reach the lost that they might be saved from sin. He desires that His people strive to be holy and obedient unto Him that we might minister to those around us who are hurting and in need as He provides. We serve others, equipped with the Word of reconciliation and righteousness, rightly divided and fitly spoken, that they may see Christ in us, the hope of Glory. Our God has commanded us to love one another with an unfeigned love, even as He first loved us, and to disciple one another in the Word of God so that we may all grow in grace and in the Knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Our Lord has commissioned those who are His with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to go where He sends us in the power of the Holy Spirit. As we go, we are to proclaim the Good News of forgiveness through repentance and reconciliation with the Father through faith in His Son, that those who believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah of God might have life in His Name.

God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance and the knowledge of the Truth. Jesus loves you and wants to establish a covenant relationship with you that is real and personal. Surrender to Him on His terms and He will give you a brand new life of discipleship and fellowship with Him that is abundant and everlasting. God calls you to faith in Christ and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary to pay your sIn debt. He has provided the only way of reconciliation with God, forgiveness from God, and Salvation through Jesus Christ, the Son of God who is God the Son, to give you a new life in Christ. Turn away from yourself and your sIn and turn to Him alone for eternal Life, now and always.

In Christ,
Jefferson Sweet
