And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of meat from the king. But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house. And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then didst thou not go down unto thine house? And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing. (2 Sam. 11:8-11)
Both David and Bathsheba had both no doubt attempted to persuade Uriah to come into the house and enjoy the comforts of being home, but Uriah refused. His integrity and association with his fellow soldiers meant that he could not be on holiday while they were at war. David had summoned him to the capital but he rightfully felt he was still under orders and in war conditions and not released to enjoy himself. Whether he suspected their attempts were something more, he certainly had no idea when he went back to the front that he carried his own death sentence as David further manipulated events to cover his sin.
Christians are at war, not with the people of this world but with the powers and princes of the spiritual plane. We must be vigilant and remain on our war footing in the spiritual battle we face, not accepting the comforts and pleasures of this world but remaining focused on where the battle lies. If we forget the battle we are in and become conformed to this world and its ways, we will be dissuaded or discouraged, even defeated, as the enemy brings all that he has against us. Doubts and dissension may come, but we must not let our guard down, and stay committed to all that God has called us to do in reaching the lost with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, teaching all nations all that He has commanded, and preaching His Word in season and out. Our missions, ministry, and discipleship should be fully entwined and enjoined with the purpose of making people better, not for this world, but for the next. It may cost us in this life, but the rewards are eternal for those of us who are born again by faith in Him and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary and are called and commissioned in His service to do and be all that He commands of His people to bring repentance and salvation to whosoever will receive it until He is done with us.
Until that day, God has sent those of us who are His saints and know Him out into this world to reach the lost that they might be saved from sin. He desires that His people strive to be holy and obedient unto Him that we might minister to those around us who are hurting and in need as He provides. We serve others, equipped with the Word of reconciliation and righteousness, rightly divided and fitly spoken, that they may see Christ in us, the hope of Glory. Our God has commanded us to love one another with an unfeigned love, even as He first loved us, and to disciple one another in the Word of God so that we may all grow in grace and in the Knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Our Lord has commissioned those who are His with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to go where He sends us in the power of the Holy Spirit. As we go, we are to proclaim the Good News of forgiveness through repentance and reconciliation with the Father through faith in His Son, that those who believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah of God might have life in His Name.
God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance and the knowledge of the Truth. Jesus loves you and wants to establish a covenant relationship with you that is real and personal. Surrender to Him on His terms and He will give you a brand new life of discipleship and fellowship with Him that is abundant and everlasting. God calls you to faith in Christ and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary to pay your sIn debt. He has provided the only way of reconciliation with God, forgiveness from God, and Salvation through Jesus Christ, the Son of God who is God the Son, to give you a new life in Christ. Turn away from yourself and your sIn and turn to Him alone for eternal Life, now and always.
In Christ,
