So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the people lay round about him. Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not smite him the second time. And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORD'S anointed, and be guiltless? David said furthermore, As the LORD liveth, the LORD shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish. The LORD forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the LORD'S anointed: but, I pray thee, take thou now the spear that is at his bolster, and the cruse of water, and let us go. (1 Sam. 26:7-11)
David was content to wait upon the LORD to give him the kingdom in His time. David knew that if he took Saul’s life and the kingdom his way, not only would the people not follow David because of his treachery, but he would never have the kingdom God’s way and the kingdom of Israel would be in turmoil because of his rebellion in taking things His way. David made sure Abishai knew that striking the anointed king of Israel would be an offense against the LORD because God had put Saul into that position and it was not their place to remove him. Having the kingdom in their time would not be obedience to God because it was not in His time or His way but seeking their own desires and acting in the flesh instead of following the LORD.
God will bring about His purposes and His plans in His time and His people should seek His face and His Word in following Him. Our Lord will direct His people to accomplish the ministry and missions which He has given us to do, but He would have us to do it His way and not our own. When we act in the flesh, whether it be to promote ourselves or in conflict with those who are over us, our ministries will be affected and ineffective in reaching the lost with His Good News of Salvation through faith in Him and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary. Seeking our own way, we will not be heard as well when teaching all nations of all that our LORD has commanded through His Word, because of our own disobedience to that Word. Preaching and proclaiming the Word of the LORD will be ineffectual and powerless because we are acting in our flesh and not obeying the Spirit of the LORD who indwells and empowers His people.
While we are here, God has sent those of us who are His saints and know Him out into this world to reach the lost that they might be saved from sin. He desires that His people strive to be holy and obedient unto Him that we might minister to those around us who are hurting and in need as He provides. We serve others, equipped with the Word of reconciliation and righteousness, rightly divided and fitly spoken, that they may see Christ in us, the hope of Glory. Our God has commanded us to love one another with an unfeigned love, even as He first loved us, and to disciple one another in the Word of God so that we may all grow in grace and in the Knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Our Lord has commissioned those who are His with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to go where He sends us in the power of the Holy Spirit. As we go, we are to proclaim the Good News of forgiveness through repentance and reconciliation with the Father through faith in His Son, that those who believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah of God might have life in His Name.
God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance and the knowledge of the Truth. Jesus loves you and wants to establish a covenant relationship with you that is real and personal. Surrender to Him on His terms and He will give you a brand new life of discipleship and fellowship with Him that is abundant and everlasting. God calls you to faith in Christ and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary to pay your sIn debt. He has provided the only way of reconciliation with God, forgiveness from God, and Salvation through Jesus Christ, the Son of God who is God the Son, to give you a new life in Christ. Turn away from yourself and your sIn and turn to Him alone for eternal Life, now and always.
In Christ,
