And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear. Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He shall presently give Me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take Me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me. But all this was done, that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook Him, and fled. (Mat 26:51-56)
Jesus had earlier called for them to have a few swords, knowing the Scriptures and knowing what was to come. Peter, for it was Peter who struck the servant, was a fisherman, and so missed with the sword and struck his ear. Jesus not only healed the injury, but used the opportunity to speak Truth into the situation, for had He not, then the crowd could have gotten ugly in response. Jesus calmly chastised the crowd, for the misuse of authority, to apprehend a single unarmed man, who was only a perceived threat to the false authority of the religious pretenders in the Sanhedrin in the middle of the night.
The Jewish authorities were not too concerned with the Law at this point, for they broke several of GOD's laws, Jewish ordinances, and Roman directives just to silence our Lord, who spoke with the real Authority and challenged their place and power over the people. But, Jesus had a greater plan, and by the determinate counsel of GOD, held His peace and His power, for He was steadfast and had willingly and humbly set His mind on the Cross, that would provide Salvation to all who believe and repent of their sIn.
Those of us who are in Christ, saved not only from our sIn and its judgment and condemnation, but also to serve our Lord, are not to try to use authorities and governments to advance a social gospel, for that is not their purpose. We certainly are to be involved in our governments, for otherwise those who hate GOD and the things of GOD will be the only voice, but we cannot use force or the sword for our purposes, but to follow the Rule of Law. The Church has a different purpose, to meet the needs of those who don't know GOD.
We minister as His ambassadors, to those who are hurting and in need as He provides. We are to disciple one another in love and in the Word, that we might be ready to answer every man that asketh us a reason of the hope that is in us with meekness and fear. We are to share the Gospel, so that those who believe may be saved and be made a new creature in Christ. Not the social gospel, that seeks to fix society, without saving them; but the Good News of Jesus Christ and reconciliation with GOD, that will bring Salvation to communities through those who believe and have life in His Name.
For GOD is not willing that any should perish, but that all would come to repentance and the knowledge of the Truth. Jesus loves you and wants to establish a covenant relationship with you that is real and personal. Surrender to Him on His terms and He will give you a brand new life of discipleship and fellowship with Him that is abundant and everlasting. GOD calls you to trust Him and what He has already done for you to pay your sIn debt. He has provided the only way of reconciliation with GOD with forgiveness and Salvation through Jesus Christ, the Son of GOD who is GOD the Son, to give you a new life in Christ. Turn away from yourself and your sIn and turn to Him alone for eternal Life, now and always.
