The Feasts of the LORD

Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the Feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are My Feasts. Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the Sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings. These are the Feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons. In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD'S Passover. (Lev 23:2-5)
All the children of Israel and their guests were to observe the Feasts of the Lord and worship the Lord on these special Holy days. From the weekly Sabbath in which they were to rest from their labours, to the remembrance of when the Lord passed over them and delivered them from Egypt. Other feasts continued throughout the year, the feast of weeks, which we call Pentecost today, the feast of trumpets blowing in the new civil year, and the Day of Atonement, the offering of the High Priest for all the sins of all the people. Lastly, the feast of booths which remembered their time wandering in the wilderness as strangers and pilgrims.

God commanded certain commemorations and Holy days which were to be remembered with solemn assemblies, worship offerings, and rest. The weekly Sabbath, or day of rest, was to remember that the Lord God created all things in six days (literal 24-hour days) and rested on the seventh. Sabbath means rest, and the Israelites were to remember that God is their rest as well. The Passover commemorated their deliverance from bondage in Egypt when God passed over those who were covered by the blood of the lamb. It also looked forward to the Lamb of God, the Messiah, who would take away the sins of the world. The other feasts also commemorate and celebrate the life of Israel and what God continued to do in and for them as a people and a nation even as they give us a picture of the life and death of Christ.

Today, Jesus Christ is our rest, for those who are secure in Him. We celebrate His Passover of us when we put our faith and trust in Him and received Him by faith in His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary. His life, mission, and passion was not only a fulfillment of the Law, these feasts, and the Scriptures, but also the final sacrifice for sin for those who surrender to God on His terms and turn to Him for forgiveness, reconciliation, and salvation. We observe the Sabbath, not by resting on a particular day, but resting in Christ. We celebrate His Passover, in remembering His deliverance of us from the bondage of sin and our freedom in Christ to live His live, a life which is truly life and is eternal. We celebrate the outpouring of His Spirit upon His Church at Pentecost. We look forward to the day which the Trumpet shall sound and the Lord will call us Home to be with Him, to His return to judge and rule from Israel, and the final atonement of all things through Him who is our Creator, our Redeemer, and our King.

God has sent those of us that know Him out into this world to reach the lost that they might be saved from sin. He desires that His people strive to be holy and obedient unto Him that we might minister to those around us who are hurting and in need as He provides. We serve others, equipped with the Word of reconciliation and righteousness, rightly divided and fitly spoken, that they may see Christ in us, the hope of Glory. Our GOD has commanded us to love one another with an unfeigned love, even as He first loved us, and to disciple one another in the Word of GOD so that we may all grow in grace and in the Knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Our Lord has commissioned those who are His with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to go where He sends us in the power of the Holy Spirit. As we go, we are to proclaim the Good News of forgiveness through repentance and reconciliation with the Father through faith in His Son, that those who believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah of GOD might have life in His Name.

GOD is not willing that any should perish, but that all would come to repentance and the knowledge of the Truth. Jesus loves you and wants to establish a covenant relationship with you that is real and personal. Surrender to Him on His terms and He will give you a brand new life of discipleship and fellowship with Him that is abundant and everlasting. GOD calls you to faith in Christ and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary to pay your sIn debt. He has provided the only way of reconciliation with GOD, forgiveness from GOD, and Salvation through Jesus Christ, the Son of GOD who is GOD the Son, to give you a new life in Christ. Turn away from yourself and your sIn and turn to Him alone for eternal Life, now and always.

In Christ,
Jefferson Sweet
