And when the hour was come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. And He said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the Kingdom of God. And He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the Kingdom of God shall come. And He took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is My body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of Me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you. (Luke 22:14-20)
Jesus was demonstrating with the unleavened bread and fruit of the vine, not only His sinlessness as the Lamb of God who taketh away the sins of the world, but also His offering of Himself. He would soon be stricken by the authorities, smitten and whipped, scorned, wounded, bruised, and crucified, hung on a tree to take the curse of sin upon Himself. The sacrifice of Jesus for sin would fulfill all the offerings and types pictured throughout the Scriptures as Jesus Himself became the final sacrifice for sin. Holy, perfect, without spot or blemish, and willing, Jesus suffered all the humiliation and scorn, leading finally to His death in our place. Every time we celebrate the Lord’s supper we commemorate and remember His death for our sins and His return to judge this world and rule His Kingdom. The bread and juice do not save, we cannot eat and drink our way into Heaven, but serve as reminders of all that He suffered to pay for our sins.
Sin, in all its permutations and despite our excuses, is an offense to a Holy and Righteous God and is worthy of death. All of us who have repented of our sins and been born again by faith in Christ and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary are reminded of all that He suffered in our place every time we celebrate His death, burial, and resurrection. It is the resurrection that makes the cross glorious and worth celebrating with the remembrance of broken bread and poured out juice until He returns for His own and to rule on this earth as the King He already is. Because of our faith in Him and because He is coming back, those who are in Christ should be stirred to obedience in reaching the lost for Christ, teaching the nations all that He commanded, and preaching His Word, that whosoever will may come to Him on His terms and be saved from their sin and unto a new life in Jesus Christ, our Creator, Redeemer, and King.
Until He comes for us, God has sent those of us who are His saints and know Him out into this world to reach the lost that they might be saved from sin. He desires that His people strive to be holy and obedient unto Him that we might minister to those around us who are hurting and in need as He provides. We serve others, equipped with the Word of reconciliation and righteousness, rightly divided and fitly spoken, that they may see Christ in us, the hope of Glory. Our God has commanded us to love one another with an unfeigned love, even as He first loved us, and to disciple one another in the Word of God so that we may all grow in grace and in the Knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Our Lord has commissioned those who are His with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to go where He sends us in the power of the Holy Spirit. As we go, we are to proclaim the Good News of forgiveness through repentance and reconciliation with the Father through faith in His Son, that those who believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah of God might have life in His Name.
God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance and the knowledge of the Truth. Jesus loves you and wants to establish a covenant relationship with you that is real and personal. Surrender to Him on His terms and He will give you a brand new life of discipleship and fellowship with Him that is abundant and everlasting. God calls you to faith in Christ and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary to pay your sIn debt. He has provided the only way of reconciliation with God, forgiveness from God, and Salvation through Jesus Christ, the Son of God who is God the Son, to give you a new life in Christ. Turn away from yourself and your sIn and turn to Him alone for eternal Life, now and always.
In Christ,
