Behold, I have taught you Statutes and Judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these Statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon Him for? And what nation is there so great, that hath Statutes and Judgments so righteous as all this Law, which I set before you this day? Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons; (Deut. 4:5-9)
As the children of Israel were preparing to go over into the Promised Land, Moses reminded them of all that God had commanded them. He rehearsed in their hearing all that the LORD had said and done that they might remember when they were in the land and taught their sons and sons’ sons of all that God did and continued to do. The Israelites were to do all that God has commanded, for the nation which would be strong and wise is the nation that feared the LORD and kept His commandments. The people who would be great and understanding were the people who followed God in practice as well as principle and obeyed His Word, not adding to or subtracting from any which the LORD had given unto them.
Moses reminded this generation of all that their previous generation had seen of the hand of the LORD and all His commands that they might keep His Word and do His will in the land which they were going in to possess. God would be with them and go before them but would only give them victory as they obeyed Him. If they strayed or rebelled as their fathers had done, or added to or subtracted from His Word by tradition or the commandments of men, they would not have victory before their enemies. God had promised them the land and now expected them to go in and possess it as the holy people of God who kept His Commandments and followed His Laws which He had given them.
We are to do that which the Lord has commanded His church to do. While there are many things in Israel’s Law which are not for the church today, the principles of holiness unto the Lord, purity from the world, and obedience to His Word, still hold true. For the Christian we are to keep His Word, rightly dividing the Word of Truth, in principle and in practice, that we may glorify God in all things and reach, teach, and preach, His Word to the lost, the nations, and the people, until He is done with us. We reach the lost with the Gospel that they might repent and surrender to Him on His terms. We teach the nations that they may honour God in righteousness. We preach His Word so that all may know Him and grow in Him as He works to draw men unto Himself. Though we live here in this world, we are not to be of the world but to possess Christ who is our life and do His Word and accomplish His will as He directs and leads His people in faith and obedience.
While we are here God has sent those of us that know Him out into this world to reach the lost that they might be saved from sin. He desires that His people strive to be holy and obedient unto Him that we might minister to those around us who are hurting and in need as He provides. We serve others, equipped with the Word of reconciliation and righteousness, rightly divided and fitly spoken, that they may see Christ in us, the hope of Glory. Our God has commanded us to love one another with an unfeigned love, even as He first loved us, and to disciple one another in the Word of God so that we may all grow in grace and in the Knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Our Lord has commissioned those who are His with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to go where He sends us in the power of the Holy Spirit. As we go, we are to proclaim the Good News of forgiveness through repentance and reconciliation with the Father through faith in His Son, that those who believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah of God might have life in His Name.
God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance and the knowledge of the Truth. Jesus loves you and wants to establish a covenant relationship with you that is real and personal. Surrender to Him on His terms and He will give you a brand new life of discipleship and fellowship with Him that is abundant and everlasting. God calls you to faith in Christ and His finished and perfect work on the Cross of Calvary to pay your sIn debt. He has provided the only way of reconciliation with God, forgiveness from God, and Salvation through Jesus Christ, the Son of God who is God the Son, to give you a new life in Christ. Turn away from yourself and your sIn and turn to Him alone for eternal Life, now and always.
